Howard Schultz 2020 ? D iscussion inside.

Kinja'd!!!

If he ran (as an independent), he’d definitely steal votes from the Democratic candidate; in the past, I’ve liked the idea of a centrist independent candidate, but I don’t think that Schultz is the right person (he’s aligned with the left, not a true centrist), and I’m not for anything that gives Trump another 4 years.

And Trump is now basically daring him to run, saying he “doesn’t have the guts”: either The Donald’s normal blathering, or a very smart political move. The reality show presidency continues...

Your thoughts?

We always have this dicussion here about Carlos Slim

“Oh will he run” “Oh he’d be a good candidate”

I say, shut it. Maybe Schultz is more prepared to be President than Trump is, but that doesn’t make him prepared enough.

He’s inextricably tied to the company, but he stepped down as CEO months ago in preparation for this run. But yeah, way too far to the left to be a true independent candidate.

An interesting question: what percentage of Trump voters have ever bought a cup of coffee from Starbucks?

I would like to see a strong independent candidate have a successful run, but with our current system I fear the same scenario you have described.

I don’t really understand why Schultz wouldn’t just run as a Democrat if he truly wanted to win. What needs to happen is a strong “independent” need to win associated with one of the two parties then push for reform that rids us of the two party system.

Ranked voting could solve the presidential problem. If we had ranked voting a Schultz ran independent, it could allow those who say “I like this guy, but I also don’t like Trump” to rank Schultz 1 while still placing the Democratic candidate ahead of the Republican option.

I would like to see this regardless, but your scenario does assume that Trump will be the Republican nominee. He might not be for a variety of reasons. I think the 2020 election is going to be quite interesting.

He is taking his motivation for running directly from Abraham Lincoln, sort of. He is running so that government of the rich, by the rich, for the rich shall not perish from the earth.

Also remember, the fact that he couldn’t get Seattle to give him taxpayer money so he could make even more money is the reason that the Seattle Sonics are now the OKC Thunder.

Same, this is not the time to be splitting votes.

Sure he’s had actual business experience running a truly huge corporation with proper accountability – and not to be ageist but he probably also has seen enough in his life to be a solid leader (as opposed to say, a President Zuckerberg, shudder). So I want to tell the side of me going “no more non-public servants jumping right in to the presidency not having a clue about how any of it works” to calm down. But yeah Trump’s 35-40% is never leaving him and this will only split the D votes…so where will that leave us?

Oh and what the hell is the RNC doing? Have they completely just given up and decided being a Republican means being a Trumpeter now? I’ve never associated with the party, but would expect more from the decent folks out there who just merely have a conservative outlook on life.

Also, if this is going to become a trend with businessmen starting to run for president I’d like to see better solid rules put in place around conflicts of interest, a binding plan for divesting ownership , and public disclosure of interests BEFORE getting on the ballot.

Seeing how many Democratic candidates are running, I think the Dems are already fragmenting their voters among all the candidates pretty heavily.

I hope left leaning people can unite under one candidate once the Primaries are over.....

He’s going to need a lot of convincing to not run at this point.

Potential scenario: no strong Democrat rises to the top, and at some point Schultz has the better chance to win, so everyone who was making the argument that Schultz is the spoiler, turns on the the Democrat candidate, saying a vote for them is a vote for Trump, and Schultz becomes the de facto D nominee.

I’m sure he considered it, but he probably didn’t want to have to deal with all the debates, etc. that the D candidates will have to go through on the way to the nomination. It’s definitely the selfish choice to run as an independent (he may view himself as that, but no one else will).

“He might not be” - good Lord I hope that’s the case...

Unfortunately third-party candidacies don’t work well in our system. I wouldn’t support him either way, but I don’t want to get stuck with another 4 years of Trump because of his ego. At least Bloomberg looks like he will run as a Democrat if he runs.

Ultimately, I’d love for the US to scrap our broken Electoral College system and adopt ranked choice ballots for instant runoffs, which would do away with a lot of these stupid side effects. I don’t see that happening for a long time  though. My hope is that it can be adopted for smaller races (some of this is happening already), and that that creates pressure to adopt it for higher offices. The presidency is hardest of all, because the problem still exists if any more than two candidates win states.

They both have issues, but if they can get the party to rally around them and turn out ... who knows?

Pretty much all comes down to Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona & Wisconsin. Gotta have a candidate that can win in these places.

Do we though?

On the face of it a business leader running the country could work well. So long as they have well qualified advisers and appointees that can operate the more politically charged aspects of the job well.

Trump was never going to be that leader. I would still be open to the concept, though it wouldn’t hurt for that person to have SOME experience in politics prior to the presidency. If someone like Schultz is truly serious about being president, it isn’t that tall of an ask for them to spend one term in congress first.

Agreed about business people and elected office. While I probably align more closely with Schultz’s philosophies and there were some pretty horrific problems with Bloomberg’s time in leadership – at least he does have experience working in government. Agreed that congress would be better suited as a stepping stone to the presidency, but in general at least personally I view it as a pretty crucial bit of perspective and experience.

There are very few people who voted for Trump who would vote for Warren.

I have no idea when they were banned, but it’s 1.5 million

On the other hand, I agree, very few Trump voters would vote for Warren, and maybe even fewer republicans in general. But the issue of polarizing to win a smaller crazier base, or trying to unite with a bigger, flimsy base is going to be the issue in 2020.

Republicans have been running on the “businessman” platform for decades. Have they ever really balanced a budget and left a surplus? Nope. California is a great measure for this. We’re generally the worlds fifth largest economy, and when a Republican gets their hands on the reigns they take a budget SURPLUS and turn it into a huge deficit . And then it takes a Democrat to dig this behemoth of a state out of that whole, and then leave a nice pile of cash for when the shit hits the fan again.

Jerry Brown was absolutely a career politician, and he left a fucking MASSIVE budget surplus.

I don’t see his run being serious at all and it’s a real shame that’s he’s not going to be running for the Democratic nomination. A variety of candidates running in the primaries is the best way to get a good candidate.

Question: What policies do you consider to be the tenets of true centrism?

Kinja'd!!! davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com > B/Xmrrmvr

He’s serious enough to step down as CEO from his company, write a book - https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/564768/from-the-ground-up-by-howard-schultz/9780525509448/ - and now put his name out there with a 60 Minutes special. He’s a year into this decision.

This is a good question, and I’m not sure of the answer. No sacred cows, best ideas win, balance between industry & environmental concerns, rationality not extremism , debt/deficit reduction, etc. For all I know, his positions may be centrist, but the fact that he’s a lifelong Democrat, from a very liberal place, and was head of a company that many see is aligned with liberal ideals (whether that perception is legitimate or not), does not set him up well to draw many votes from right of center.

I’m just looking forward to a now battle-hardened Trump destroying  whoever he runs against in the debates. I don’t think there’s anybody on the D side that could win a debate against him.

the issue I have with a businessman ideal is that in business if a market isn’t doing well, cut and run. If a division is unprofitable, gut it. And those two things don’t work well when your employees and customers are the american people. McNamera should be a lesson on how smart people can make really dumb choices.
